Glory of Nature – Nigella Flower – 02 Composition

Here’s how I decided on the composition of the second photo – the one I used as the basis for this new painting.

I’m aiming for an abstract feel, while still making the final image recognisable.

Here’s the second photo I took based on the crop above.

On the new image, I noticed two anthers were overlapping and drawing the eye.

I’ll use a touch of artistic license at the drawing stage to separate these and make the picture visually comfortable.

Glory of Nature – Nigella Flower – 01 Inspiration

I’ve always been fascinated by the ‘alien’ appearance of Nigella flowers and am excited to capture the beauty of one in a painting. I also wanted to challenge myself depicting the rich blues of their petal-like sepals in paint.

This is my reference photo of a flower grown in the garden.

I’ve decided the subject of my painting will be even more enlarged giving the stamen filaments, anthers, pistil and bracts equal emphasis to the sepals and a more abstract appearance overall.
